There are so many aspects of a teacher evaluation, its really hard to pick just one to focus on. South Dakota has moved towards using the Charlotte Danielson Framework as our basis for evaluation. See the photo below for the outlined framework.
As you can see, there are 4 main domains. I feel very comfortable with Domains 1 & 4. Domain 3 is pretty good, most of the time. Domain 2 is my struggle area. I feel like I connect with students very well, but sometimes the interactions can feel a little more like a friendship than a teacher/student. I know this is because I’m a young teacher (although I’m getting older) and I like to have fun with my students. However, I also know that I must work hard to make sure it is a relationship of respect, not just fun and games. I also know that I REALLY struggle with classroom procedures and organizing!! You could say I’m a mix of type A & B, but more type B. I don’t really like super-structured environments, but I appreciate them. I know how helpful structure and organization are for my stress level, but I need to practice more to really make them part of my way of doing things. So, I can definitely say that my focus area for this year is to improve on Domain 2. I’m going to work very hard to keep things organized, structured (to a good level), and respectful.
Which part of the framework do you think is your strength? Which is your weakness? Any tips for myself and others that may be struggling with organization and classroom procedures? Comment below!
